How does this film noir fan spend Presidents Day? With a presidential double-bill. Whatever you think of his politics, Ronald Reagan is the only president who was a career actor. So I’m watching Storm Warning (1951), a noirish melodrama where Reagan is a crusading DA who takes down the KKK. Then, it’ll be The Killers (1964), with Reagan’s only on-screen turn as a bad guy.
In a pinch, you could substitute any of the four Brass Bancroft movies Reagan starred in: Secret Service of the Air, Code of the Secret Service, Smashing the Money Ring and Murder in the Air. These certainly aren’t noir, but are pulpy adventures of the sort that coexisted happily with proto-noir in pulp magazines.
Are there any other films noir with presidential connections? The Manchurian Candidate, mostly because of urban legend, is connected to the Kennedy assassination. But I’m hard-pressed to think of any others. Any other suggestions?
